About

Mission

There are many stakes in the Arab and Mediterranean region that directly affect Switzerland and Europe. The economic development disparities between the two shores of the Mediterranean, with the resulting social difficulties, the migrations, the arms proliferation and dealing, the open conflicts in the region, the growing of extremist movements, are few examples of the problems that we are facing today. Therefore European stability is intimately (closely) linked to the stability of the Mediterranean area. Now that the Cold war is over, the Euro-Mediterranean space is rebuilding itself and new actors, new powers, new balances of power appear.

Since its creation in September 2000, and especially since the events of September 11th 2001, the CERMAM endeavors to give a better understanding of the new political pattern of the Arab and Muslim World.

It aims to play the role of catalyst and advocate for study and research initiatives on the Arab and Euro-Mediterranean area; to gather all the different people interested by the issues related to this region, and so to establish privileged links with Swiss and foreign research institutes (on the matter of thought and studies.)

Moreover CERMAM is about to complete the creation of a network of specialists whose main task will be to provide analyses, studies and propositions on the Arab, Muslim, and Mediterranean World in the economic, political and social areas. This network is intended to meet various needs and demands. In particular, CERMAM will try to convince potential partners, public and private, of the value and significance of investigating this region, in order to support the work of researchers, analysts and specialized academics.

Finally, CERMAM organizes seminars and round tables on current events followed by the publication of acts. Thus CERMAM hopes to bring a new look to institutions and companies interested by the Arab World; to become a forum for debates and propositions for the Arab World; to offer to researchers and medias a scope for thought, discussion, and analysis, in other words, a role of observer and expert.

The newsletter published today by the CERMAM is a way to talk about and give a better understanding of the East so close to us and at the same so far, and to dialogue with you.

Good reading to all of you.
