Ilan Pappé. Oneworld Publications. London. 2006.
In his new novel entitled “The ethnic cleansing of Palestine”, Ilan Pappe an Israeli historian and professor at the University of Haifa, pursues his defence of Palestinian rights mission. The author’s courageous positions and his Israeli nationality have attracted him a lot of attention, making him a well listened historian, but he seduced his London audience by his precise and human analysis.
Ilan Pappe enlightens us on the realities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but not only with the aim of defending Palestinians. Facing the historical horrors and analysis of Israel’s situation, he advances his country’s moral necessity to recognise these acts and accept the Palestinians’ right to return as the only way to the acceptance of Israel in the Middle-East, and to peace. Even though his work documents the tragic events of 1948, he does not mention the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians as a past event but as an ongoing process that needs to be terminated: “Now is not the time to educate the Israeli population, but to stop them”. Ilan pappe also warns against future Israeli ethnic cleansing on a larger scale, and against a much too militarised government, defied by its recent failures in Lebanon.
